Chapter Five
It had been six months since the death of Marlowe, and Kita was in a funk. After his funeral, she boarded a flight to Washington, D.C. and prepared to start school at Howard University. Things there were an epic fail, and she couldnât concentrate. She missed home, and she missed her brother. Without a word, one day she packed an overnight bag, left her dorm room, and boarded the Greyhound bus back home.
Jackie wasnât surprised when Kita showed up on her doorstep. Actually, she was happy to see her.
âAlthough weâve come to the end of the road . . .â Boyz II Men crooned over the sound system in Kitaâs room. She had been playing the song nonstop since sheâd been home. It was hard to believe that her brother was gone. If her tears couldâve built a stairwell to heaven, sheâd be able to see him daily.
âKita, please play something else, baby.â Jackie poked her head into her daughterâs room. The song was wearing her out. She knew this was a part of her daughterâs grieving process, but Jackie couldnât take it. Losing her dear son had damn near killed her. She was tired of being reminded of the pain day in and day out.
Closing the bedroom door, Jackie returned to the dining room table. She was sitting there, sorting out bills. Almost all of them were past due or shut-off notices.
âDamn!â Jackie rubbed her forehead. This was something sheâd never had to do when Marlowe was alive. He paid for everything and even gave his mother spending money every Friday. After using all she had saved to bury her child, she was left with practically nothing. Mr. P helped as much as he could, but the majority of his check was being garnished by the IRS for back taxes. Jackie went and applied for various jobs, but no one called her back. Once again, times were tough for the Jones family, but she had faith that things would soon change.
âWhat are you doing, Mama?â Kita entered the dining room and took a seat. She felt bad that she hadnât been able to help her mother with any bills. While away at college, she used every dime she had to purchase textbooks and to eat.
âIâm just catching up on a few things,â Jackie lied. She didnât want her daughter to worry. However, Kita had already snooped through the mail. She knew what was going on.
âHow bad is it?â Kita asked.
âWeâll be all right.â Jackie had faith that something would work out.
âWhat happened to the money you saved up?â Kita wasnât trying to be all in her motherâs business, but she was curious. Jackie forever preached about rainy days, and now it was a fuckinâ thunderstorm.
âI used it to bury your brother.â Marlowe didnât have any life insurance; therefore, Jackie had to fork over almost sixteen grand to lay her son to rest. She used the rest on bills and groceries.
âDonât worry. Iâll figure something out.â Suddenly, Kita remembered the work she had been holding for Marlowe, as well as what she took from Man-Man.
